Indian media says he collapsed after suffering heart attack at his residence and was immediately rushed to hospital

Veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75 on Thursday, Indian media reported.

According to the Indian media, Patekar collapsed after suffering a heart attack at his residence in Goa and was immediately rushed to hospital.

Doctors attempted to save him for approximately 45 minutes, but he could not be revived. His death was confirmed at 5:20am, the report stated.

Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of the Oncology Department at Manipal Hospital, said Patekar was brought dead to the hospital and was declared dead at around 5:30am, ANI reported.

Speaking to ANI, Dr Salkar said, “We had tried our best to save him, but he was brought dead. Cardiac massage was given for almost 45 minutes to an hour, but he just could not be saved.”

According to the doctor, Patekar had sent a message to a friend at around 2:30am, saying “he was not feeling well”. However, the friend did not see the message because it was late at night.

The friend subsequently called Patekar and reached his residence at around 4am, when the actor was sweating and gradually losing consciousness, Dr Salkar said.

He said that Patekar’s caretaker was sent to the hospital to arrange an ambulance. When the emergency response team arrived at the residence, they began administering “cardiac massage” as the actor was completely “unresponsive”.

“Patekar was shifted to Manipal Hospital at around 4:20am or 4:30am, where doctors continued efforts to revive him, but he could not be saved,” he added.

According to Salkar, a police case had to be registered as the death was treated as a “medico-legal case (MLC)”, adding that Patekar’s body had been taken to “Goa Medical College for a post-mortem” examination.

He said the actor’s family was not present at the hospital, while his friends and a caretaker were accompanying him.

Patekar began his acting career in 1978 with the film Guman and remained associated with the film industry for several decades.

He appeared in several successful films, including Krantiveer, Paranda, Welcome and Ab Tak Chappan. During his career, he received three National Film Awards and was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher paid an emotional tribute to his friend Patekar in a post on X, describing him as “one of the finest actors and human beings in Indian cinema”. Kher recalled learning of Patekar’s death shortly after finishing a performance and said it was difficult to continue meeting people while absorbing the news.

“I will miss you, my friend. Your warmth. Your hugs. Your extraordinary performances,” he wrote, adding that he would remember Patekar through his films and wished he could hug him one more time.
