A meeting of the Board of Trustees of Tata Trusts, scheduled for Friday (October 10, 2025), is expected to be far from acrimony, as a warring faction reportedly led by an executive committee member has been advised to ‘cooperate’ for smooth running of the Trusts which control 66% stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group.
The meeting comes a day after the first death anniversary of Ratan N. Tata, who had passed away on October 9 last year. He was the long standing chairman of the Tata Trusts and had complete control and authority on the Trusts till his death. He was succeeded by his half brother Noel N. Tata who is the current chairman.
There had been a division in the board of trustees with a group seeking an upper hand in the running of the Trusts and attempting to influence to nominate members of the Trusts of Tata Sons, which is led by Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.
Reportedly two senior union ministers, in an unusual action, intervened in the matter and had a meeting with some of the Trustees earlier this week and is believed to have sent across a ‘strong message’ to the rival faction to ‘behave’.
An email sent to Tata Trusts seeking confirmation and clarity on the developments remained unanswered till press time. Tata Sons executives said its was business as usual.
The Tata Trusts and Tata Sons have maintained complete silence as the reported differences among trustees had been playing out in the media over a week and getting amplified day by day.
It is believed that one or two Trustees, who had raised a banner of revolt, will be asked to exit for the orderly functioning of the Trusts and that of the Tata Group which is a major industrial house of the country.
As per the Tata Sons website, the nominee directors of the Trusts on Tata Sons board are Noel N. Tata, Venu Srinivasan. Mr. Vijay Singh, a long-standing nominee of the Trusts has reportedly resigned recently under the pressure of the rivals. His name does not figure in the list of board members. The rivals are seeking to get into the board by replacing some more members so that they can have a say in the running of Tata Sons.
