‘Stupid’: Sandilands’ message to rich mates

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is on the cusp of axing tax cuts to the rich and he has an unlikely ally in one of Australia’s most highly paid celebrities.

Radio host Kyle Sandilands reportedly rakes in millions thanks to his radio show with Jackie O Henderson. He lives in Sydney’s Vaucluse — one of Australia’s wealthiest suburbs with a median house price over $9 million — owns a Ferrari and spent over $150,000 on flowers for his wedding in 2023.

But the affluent Aussie has told news.com.au he is happy to take the hit that will come with Mr Albanese’s tax cut backflip, backing the PM’s controversial change.

Mr Albanese yesterday declared, on Sandilands’ program, that “everyone will be getting a tax cut”, before today coming clean with voters that tax cuts for Aussies earning over $150,000 would be much less than expected.

Despite his election promise that legislated tax cuts would not be changing, Mr Albanese will now propose Australia’s highest earners — those on $200,000 or more — would have their planned $9075 annual tax cut slashed in half to just $4546. On the flipside, lower income earners will be better off with those between $45,000 and $135,000 securing an extra $804 a year according to new analysis commissioned by news.com.au.

Sandilands, who has made no secret of liking Mr Albanese and famously had the PM attend his wedding, said he was all for the rich having to cough up more cash.

“I don’t mind paying my fair share of tax,” he told news.com.au.

Sandilands said he started out earning only $11,000 in his first job and he was more than happy to be paying more in tax, because he is earning more.

“My accountant always says, pay your tax; you don’t want to get in trouble for doing anything stupid,” he explained.

Sandilands said paying more in tax if you’re earning more made sense.

“I think the more you earn, it is natural the more tax you should pay. That might not be popular at the high end of town, but this is the way the world goes around,” he said.

Sandilands added that no one liked having to pay more to the government, but it is just how Australia worked, and there was no point complaining about it.

“No one likes tax, but you got to do it. That is the society we live in, and it is why Australia is great country,” he declared.

In a press conference today, Mr Albanese didn’t reveal exactly what the tax cuts would be but pointed out that working class Aussies were doing it tough, and that may result in election promises being forgotten.

“My determination and my job is to get the best outcome for Australians. It’s to respond to the circumstances which we confront. And we know that there’s been considerable coverage about the pressure that is on low and middle-income earners particularly with regard to cost of living.

“I’m a leader who speaks at the National Press Club and makes myself accountable; I’ll be giving a full exposition of economic policy and our response to provide assistance to Middle Australia on cost of living at the National Press Club tomorrow,” he said.

Mr Albanese appeared on The Kyle and Jackie O yesterday and remained vague about his tax plans but said he was a supporter of tax cuts for everyone.

When Sandilands asked, “Me too?”, the PM replied, “You will always be looked after, Kyle, because I know you’re struggling.”

“People laugh but I am in the highest tax bracket there is – the highest,” Sandilands said.

“That’s because you’re one of the highest earners,” Mr Albanese laughed.

“What we’re doing is looking at how we can help low and middle-income earners. Middle Australia particularly is doing really tough. People have a mortgage so we’re looking at ways in which we can provide assistance to them,” he said.

“We did that last year with a range of measures. People are benefiting from cheaper medicines, cheaper childcare, the energy price relief plan, but we’re looking at other ways as well.”
