IIndia has fuel reserves to meet more than 80 days of its requirements, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at the curtain raiser of India Energy Week 2027 in Kolkata on Monday.

“The number of refineries has grown, import terminals have grown and I am sometimes asked why isn’t the country’s SPR bigger?” Mr. Puri said, adding, “Please combine everything we have more than eighty plus days [worth] of capacity to store.”

Mr. Puri said India’s energy security framework extends beyond strategic petroleum reserves (SPR), with expanded refining capacity, import infrastructure and other storage facilities contributing to the overall buffer.

“Today, India is not only a major centre for energy consumption – it is the third-largest consumer, fourth-largest refining centre – but [also] shaping the global energy conversation,” he said.

He highlighted India’s role in global energy initiatives, including its BRICS presidency, the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

The India Energy Week 2027 would be held from January 28 to 31 in Kolkata.
