Former Brisbane Roar mentor Warren Moon has been appointed coach of the Papua New Guinea national team.
Moon, 41, coached the Roar in 83 matches in all competitions from July 2020 to February this year before being sacked
Since then, he has been linked to other A-League coaching jobs, including positions at Perth Glory, Newcastle Jets and Central Coast.
However, Moon has instead accepted an offer from PNG.
“I was genuinely looking for something different, and experience something different,” said Moon, who left Brisbane for Port Moresby on Thursday.
“Becoming an international coach is obviously different for me, especially in a region that’s up and coming with its football.”
Moon’s first task is to prepare PNG for the Pacific Games, which start on November 19 in the Solomon Islands.
After that he will turn his attention towards the start of the Oceania qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I’ve got a challenge ahead of me, but I’m looking forward to it,” Moon said.
“This is another step for me to continue to improve as a coach.”
Moon will also still keep an eye on the fortunes of the Roar, where he was a foundation player in 2005.
“Any success the Roar have this season, (coach) Ross Aloisi can take huge credit for that,” he said.
