The Department of Posts has announced the suspension of all categories of mails to the U.S., including letters, documents, and gifts valued up to $100.

On August 22, the Department said it would suspend from August 25 booking and transmission of postal services to the U.S., except documents/letters and gifts valued up to $100.

“In view of the inability of carriers to transport U.S.-bound mail and undefined regulatory mechanisms, the competent authority has decided to completely suspend all categories of mail to the USA, including letters/documents and gifts valued up to $100,” it said on Friday (August 29, 2025).

The U.S. withdrew the De Minimis Exemption from August 29 for goods from all countries.

According to Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, apparel, small-size carpets, gem and jewellery, wellness products, handicrafts, electronics, and footwear are some of the main products that are exported from India through the e-commerce platforms or shipped directly to consumers. “I expect a disruption for about a month (because of the repeal of the De Minimis Exemption),” he said. At present, the e-commerce players are reviewing the costing and studying the extent of additional cost that the US consumers can bear, he said.
