Goldman Sachs CEO, David Solomon, who moonlighted as a DJ under the name DJ D-Sol, is hanging up his headphones due to the unwanted media attention his bizarre hobby attracted.
Critics of the unusual side hustle have said it was a distraction from his day job of leading Wall Street’s most prestigious investment bank.
But a Goldman Sachs spokesperson told the Financial Times: “Music was not a distraction from David’s work. The media attention became a distraction.”
The bank said Mr Solomon, 61, hasn’t publicly DJed an event in “well over a year”.
In July 2022 he played Chicago music festival Lollapalooza, alongside acts such as Metallica, Dua Lipa, Green Day and The Kid Laroi.
Earlier in 2022 he played at Sports Illustrated’s Super Bowl party.
Michael Heller, co-founder of Talent Resources Sports which co-hosted the party, told Bloomberg: “After dark, he’s a different person, so free-spirited.”
His music career reportedly made the bank’s board of directors uneasy after he played at Tomorrowland, a Belgian music festival known for heavy drug use, in 2019.
Mr Solomon was also criticised for performing at a drive-in ‘tailgate’ concert in the Hamptons in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, an incident which saw him issue an apology to the Goldman Sachs board.
The CEO earned US$25 million (A$39 million) from Goldman Sachs in 2022 so is unlikely to notice the loss of income from his side hustle.
In fact, charities that may be the biggest loser from Mr Solomon’s decision, as he donated all earnings from his DJing to charities that support and help fight addiction.
Mr Solomon has 56,000 followers on his Instagram account @davidsolomonmusic, where he describes himself as a “CEO, Dad, Music Fan, DJ since 2015. All proceeds benefit charitable institutions in the fight against addiction”.
Among his DJ career highlights, Mr Solomon landed the rights to remix Whitney Houston’s iconic hit ‘I wanna dance with somebody’, which was released through his own record label, Payback Records.
He also released original tracks including ‘Learn to Love Me’, featuring Grammy winning singer Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic.
