Amazon, Inc. announced on Wednesday (December 10, 2025) that it would invest $35 billion in India in the coming years until 2030. The investment would be infused into all of Amazon’s operations in India, spanning its retail operations and its cloud and AI wings, Amazon Web Services. The firm made the announcement at its annual India event, Smbhav.

The investment comes a day after Microsoft Corporation committed a $17.5 billion investment, much of it targeted at data centre and AI infrastructure build out, which will also likely be the case for Amazon, which is already India’s largest foreign direct investor.

This investment comes as tech firms like Amazon are rapidly scaling up AI capacities around the world, and deploy eye-watering sums to that end in establishing data centres. It also comes as Amazon attempts to enter the crowded quick-commerce space, where BlinkIt, Zepto and Swiggy have established important positions.

While Amazon has already invested more than $40 billion in India since it entered the country, it has encountered pushback from large retailer groups, earning it a cold shoulder, if not outright hostility at times, from the government. While Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s investment was welcomed with a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, no official statement has been forthcoming as of press time on Wednesday from the government’s side responding to the announcement.

Amazon said it would create 3.8 million “direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs” across India by 2030. The firm said that it was the single largest individual enabler of export growth in the country, citing a report by Keystone Research.

“These investments are strategically aligned with India’s national priorities and will focus on expanding AI capabilities, enhancing logistics infrastructure, supporting small business growth and creating jobs,” Amazon said.
