Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston appears open to taking a look at what members of the provincial legislature are paid.

A freeze has been in place on pay, office budgets and living expenses since 2015 and Houston says the situation has been “a topic of discussion.”

He says if a review moves forward he would “wait to see what unfolds.”

The legislature’s Speaker, Danielle Barkhouse, was re-elected Tuesday and has 60 days to decide whether to strike an independent committee to examine member’s remuneration.

Base salaries have remained at $89,234.90 since the freeze, although there are top ups for the premier, opposition leaders and cabinet ministers.

The Opposition NDP and the Liberals support the striking of a committee but say any examination of salaries should remain at arms-length from politicians.
