In a recent update Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri, said that Instagram accounts won’t be affected if Threads account on the app is deleted. Threads users will easily be able to remove their accounts via Settings, on the app.

The untanglement with Instagram had been a long-requested feature for many Threads users, who couldn’t purge their profiles without automatically deleting Instagram. This new change comes right after a Meta update that lets Threads users opt out of having to post their Threads on Facebook and Instagram feeds.

It seems likely that Meta will soon separate Threads from other social media platforms under Meta, as the app becomes more independent. The company has already said that it intends to make the platform compatible with ActivityPub, an open-source protocol that powers Mastodon and other services in the fediverse.
