Novak Djokovic exacts revenge with blistering US Open display

Novak Djokovic has exacted his revenge at the US Open after taking down Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

Medvedev shocked the Serbian star in 2021 to claim the US Open crown, but on Monday there was no stopping the Djoker as he secured the 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory in three hours and 20 minutes.

The win lands him a staggering 24th Grand Slam title, drawing level with Margaret Court on the all-time list.

It moves him clear of Serena Williams for Grand Slam wins in the Open era.

“Djokovic is king of New York once again. Extraordinary,” Todd Woodbridge said on Channel 9’s coverage.

His win makes him the oldest US Open champion of the Open era since Ken Rosewall back in 1970 and secures him his fourth US Open crown.

In heartwarming scenes after his victory Djokovic celebrated with his children Stefan and Tara before reveling in the moment with his team.

Medvedev was gracious in defeat and heaped praise on the dominance of his opponent.

“First of all I want to ask Novak, what are you still doing here? C’mon. … I feel like I have not a bad career and I have 20 titles. You have 24 Grand Slams. Wow,” he said.

Unfortunately for the Russian the final fell on the date of his anniversary with his wife and after delivering the perfect anniverary present two years ago, today it wasn’t to be.

“Sh*t gift today,” he said.

Djokovic in the middle of his speech returned the praise to Medvedev and congratuled him and his partner on their anniversary.

“Please don’t take this the wrong way: Happy anniversary to your wife,” Djoker said.

The Serbian said the win meant the world to him and thanked his parents for sacrificing so much in his younger years to help him chase his dreams.

“It means the world to me. I’m really living my childhood dream,” Djokovic said.

“To compete at the highest level in the sport that has given me and my family so much coming from very difficult circumstances and adversities during the 90s, a couple of wars in our country and being able to push that through.

“Especially for my parents, giving a lot of sacrifice to support me and play this very expensive sport at the time, not affordable.

“I fell in love with tennis, it was quite a choice, but incredible resilience, believe from my parents and all the people around me all these years, everyone. This is your trophy as much as is mine. I love you.”

Djokovic donned a special t-shirt shortly after his win which had a photo of him next to Kobe Bryant and the number 24.

Around the photo of the duo was the slogan “Mamba Forever”. Bryant famously known as the “Black Mamba” and wore the number 24 for the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I thought of doing this t-shirt eventually if I get the chance to win the tournament,” he said.

“It was about 7 days ago. Kobe was a close friend. We chatted a lot about the winners’ mentality when I was struggling with the injury and working my way back to the top of the game.

“He was one of the people that I relied on the most, he was always there for any kind of advice and support in the most friendly way.

“What happened a few years ago hurt me deeply. So I thought it could be a nice symbolic thing to acknowledge him.”

Over the top of the shirt Djokovic wore a white lacoste jacket with 24 embroided on the right breast.

Everyone in the Djokovic camp was seen wearing the same jacket during the trophy presentation.

After racing away to secure the first set, Medvedev found his groove in the second set that turned into an all-out war.

The Russian blew a key chance of claiming the set when he failed to cash in on a vital set point, he left the door open and Djokovic obliged.

In a set that went for an absurd 144 minutes, the longest set recorded at this year’s tournament, it was Djokovic who reigned supreme.

Much like it was in the opening set, the Serbian flexed his mucles in the third as he raced away to clinch victory.

Recap the key moments from the US Open men’s final below.

9.23am – Djoker closing in on Grand Slam #24

Novak Djokovic flexed his muscles in this third set, claiming an early break to lead 3-1 but Medvedev responded by breaking straight back.

Not to be outdone Djokovic broke right back to move to 4-2 and edge closer to securing his 24th career Grand Slam.

The frustration of the situation has appeared to get to Medvedev as the Russian continues to bicker with his team.

Standing as far back as one can possibly go against the serve of Djokovic, his team looked to be pleading with him to change up his tactics and come forward.

After going down 4-2 it appeared Medvedev told his entire team to leave.

“He’s mentally starting to break down – that second set proving so costly,” Todd Woodbridge said for Nine.

9.05am – Down goes Medvedev

The Russian star hit the deck after tripping himself up as he rushed to the net. He managed to get his shot away but as he fell to the ground Djokovic’s shot fell comfortably inside the baseline.

Djokovic climbed over the net to help his opponent up but Medvedev refused the help and slowly got back to his feet.

“He didn’t want a bar of Novak helping him up, did he,” Todd Woodbridge said.

“We know he’s a very stubborn individual,” Jelena Dokic added.

9am – Medvedev takes medical timeout

After the gruelling second set Daniil Medvedev called for the trainer and had work done on his left shoulder.

As he was undergoing treatment, Novak Djokovic left the court and changed his outfit.

8.50am – Unbelievable scenes as Djoker takes the second

Medvedev will be left ruing what could have been after dropping the second set.

The Russian had a golden opportunity in the 12th game of the set but couldn’t capitalise on the set point chance.

In the tiebreak he raced out to an early 3-1 advantage but once again Djokovic came roaring back to life.

The entire stadium was brought to their feet after an absurd rally that saw both men cover extraordinary distance before Djokovic’s volley went just wide.

“Take a bow gentlemen, insane point,” Jelena Dokic said.

Despite Medvedev taking the most enthralling point of the tiebreak, it was Djokovic who once again reigned supreme to take a two sets to love lead.

The second set eventually came to an end after 104 minutes. The longest set recorded at this year’s US Open.

“What a set of tennis,” Todd Woodbridge said in commentary for Nine.

Tennis great Paul McNamee wrote: “That was, quite simply, a set for the ages.”

BBC sports commentator Jonathan Jurenko said: “Some of these exchanges have been beyond belief. The crowd going apoplectic”.

Former British tennis star Annabel Croft added: “I can’t believe what we’re witnessing. This is outrageous tennis”.

8.35am – Tiebreak time

Daniil Medvedev had a set point opportunity but couldn’t cash in as Novak Djokovic held on to send the second set into a tiebreak.

The Serbian has been showing serious signs of fatigue, wincing multiple times after lengthy rallies and continually stretching his right hip flexor.

The second set has gone for a staggering 92 minutes and it’s not over yet.

8.05am – Djoker service game has it all

The pressure has been ramped up in this one with Novak Djokovic finally facing some resistance on his service game.

At deuce the Serbian thought he had nailed a serve but as he rushed to the net the chair umpire called that it was a let.

Frustration boiled over as he delivered a few select words to the umpire before walking back to serve again.

“Djokovic not believing the accuracy of the machine,” Todd Woodbridge said.

Moments later he delivered a magical serve and volley touch as he put both hands in the arm to pump the crowd up. After 14 minutes he held serve to take the match to 4-4 in the second set.

“He knows how important that was, the pressure goes right back on Medvedev,” Jelena Dokic said.

7.50am – Bizarre signs as Djokovic collapses

We’re on serve in the second set at 4-3, but Daniil Medvedev is having a tough time holding his service games.

All four have so far gone to deuce with the Russian defending one break point, but the most bizarre moment came during the seventh game after yet another absurd rally between the pair.

After another 20 plus stroke rally, that had the crowd on the edge of their seats, Djokovic collapsed in a heap on the baseline as the exhaustion looked to have set in.

“Medvedev has to get a lift out of that – Djokovic showing almost pure exhaustion there,” Todd Woodbridge said.

“It does look like he’s hurting a little, though.”

7.30am – Celebrities out in force for final

The starpower in the stands for the men’s final is off the charts. From singing starpower to acting heavyweights, they’ve all come out for the final contest.

Here’s who has been sighted in the crowd: Leo Dicaprio, Justin Timberlake, Jerry Seinfeld, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Matt McConaughey, Jake Paul, Emma Roberts, James Marsden, Emily Ratajkowski, Martha Stewart, Sting, Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet.

7.20am – Medvedev questioned over break

As we’ve seen constantly throughout the US Open players are utilising lengthy breaks following a set.

Daniil Medvedev did just that after being wiped off the court in the opening set.

The Russian star headed off the court and into the changerooms as Djokovic sat courtside waiting for his opponent to return.

Despite the move drawing questions from Channel 9’s Todd Woodbridge, Medvedev held his nerve and serve to secure the opening game of the second set.

“Here we are again. We’ve played a set of tennis, he’s gone off for the full kit-change, some of the momentum breakers throughout this tournament have been quite extraordinary,” Woodbridge said.

“I thought Medvedev was playing himself back into that set well then, after dropping that first service game it was actually quite tight tennis.”

7am – Djoker in complete control

Novak Djokovic wasted no time getting on top of Daniil Medvedev as he secured a break of serve in the opening game of the first set.

He never looked back as he flexed his muscles all over the court to race away to a 5-2 lead before serving it out and capturing the opener 6-3 in a tick under 50 minutes.

The world number two is a staggering 72-1 at the US Open when he wins the first set, the lone loss came in the final back in 2016.

The pair engaged in several 30 plus shot rallies that delighted the crowd and left the commentary crew in disbelief.

“Wow what a rally between these two. Bring out the oxygen after that one,” Todd Woodbridge said on Channel 9’s coverage.

Medvedev looked all at sea in the opening set as Djokovic had the answers for everything and bullied his rival around Arthur Ashe Stadium.

6am – Kiwi wins women’s doubles final

Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski have beaten Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva 7-6 (9) 6-3 to win the US Open women’s doubles final.

5.30am – Djokovic not happy after underperforming

As Novak Djokovic again stands on the verge of history at the US Open, he has a score to settle with Daniil Medvedev after his loss to the Russian in the 2021 final cost him a calendar Grand Slam.

Medvedev defeated Djokovic in straight sets two years ago to prevent the Serbian from becoming the first man to win all four Grand Slams in the same year since Australian great Rod Laver in 1969.

On Monday the 36-year-old Djokovic goes in search of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title against Medvedev, who unseated reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping semi-final.

Djokovic will return to world number one next week, but he is wary of being swept up by the significance of the occasion in New York.

“Every time in a Grand Slam final it’s another shot for history, you know, and I’m aware of it, and of course I’m very proud of it,” said Djokovic.

“But again, I don’t have much time nor do I allow myself to reflect on these things or think about the history too much in this sense.

“Because when I did that in the past, like, ‘21 finals here I was maybe overwhelmed with the occasion and the opportunity and I underperformed.
