Socceroos star suffers knee injury

Socceroos star Mathew Leckie has been ruled out of Australia’s clash with Mexico in Dallas on Sunday after suffering a knee injury at training.

The Melbourne City attacker was one of just two A-League players in the Socceroos squad, the other being his club teammate Aziz Behich.

While the extent of the Leckie’s injury remains unknown, it’s understood that it’s not a torn anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral ligament damage more likely.

Leckie will almost certainly miss the start of City’s AFC Champions League campaign on September 20 against Japanese club Ventforet Kofu at AAMI Park.

City will also be sweating on Leckie being fit for the beginning of the club’s A-League season on October 20 against Western United.

Leckie will stay with the Socceroos in Dallas, where he will be treated by Socceroos medical staff, before returning to Melbourne to continue his injury rehabilitation.
