Coles has been called out over the staggering price of a “tiny” grocery haul, just days after posting a billion dollar profit.
A young Aussie who goes by the name King Kutrone online shared a video in which he complained about a small grocery shop that cost $91.84.
The Coles haul included items such as a bag of carrots, 18 cage-free eggs, a carton of soy milk, twiggy sticks, bacon, rice, cold drip coffee, dog food, onions and garlic.
“Can someone please explain to me why Australia has gone down the absolute toilet? Because cost of living at the moment is a joke,” he said as he showed off his shop.
The man went on to say “everything” he bought was either home brand or on sale.
“I’m making one meal tonight, fried rice, and we got the dog some food, okay? This came to $91,” he raged.
“How does this add up to $91, bro?”
“I mean, what a f***ing joke,” he added, zooming in on a 400g pack of Australian beef slices that cost him $13.
“How are Millennials or Gen Z meant to get ahead? How is anyone with a family even living? I don’t understand.”
“Australia is a third world country,” he captioned the video, which has been viewed more than 370,000 times, before writing in the comment section: “When does the rebellion start? I’m feeling French.”
Many commenters on the video expressed outrage over the price of the haul and said they, too, were doing it tough.
“And they put the camera feed on the self checkout like WE’RE the criminals!” one person wrote.
“$91 for such a tiny shop!! Straight to jail,” another added.
“Learn how to use the self checkout properly,” joked a third.
On Tuesday, Coles’s CEO Leah Weckert admitted Australia’s high food inflation was boosting the supermarket’s profits, saying Aussies were spending more on groceries as they chose to eat in rather than dine out.
“Eating out, takeaway and coffees from the cafe are increasingly being seen as treats for a special occasion,” she told analysts while announcing a $1.1 billion profit for the 12 months to June.
The result was up 4.8 per cent on Coles’s profits for 2021-22.
Both Coles and Woolies have reported a rise in shoplifting as many Aussies struggle to put food on the table.
Coles chief operating officer Matt Swindells said stock loss was up by 20 per cent.
“We are seeing it in every store and every category, it’s a real challenge,” he said.
