As Pakistan celebrated its 80th Independence Day on Friday, celebrities across the country took to social media to share messages of patriotism, pride and hope.

While many posts celebrated the national spirit with flags, green-and-white tributes and heartfelt wishes, some stars used the occasion to look beyond the festivities and reflect on the challenges facing Pakistan today.

From political tensions and questions surrounding governance to concerns over violence against women and children, their posts highlighted a more critical side of the country’s Independence Day conversation.

Amid the celebrations, these voices raised an important question: what does freedom mean when so many Pakistanis continue to struggle for safety, justice and basic rights?

Actor Shuja Asad shared pictures of himself dressed in Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s iconic suit-and-tie attire, posing in a style reminiscent of the country’s founder.

“Pakistan, despite everything, you remain my home, my land and a part of who I am. We may be frustrated by the times we’re living through, but our love for this country is bigger than any government or difficult chapter. I still believe in our people and in Pakistan we can build together,” he wrote.

Sharing a quote from Allama Iqbal, he added, “May we find the courage, unity and leadership to build the Pakistan we dream of,” while also saying, “And yes, consider this my little nod to the Quaid’s timeless style.”

Actor Reema Khan also marked the occasion in a white floral shalwar kameez paired with a green dupatta.

“May Allah grant peace and prosperity to our beloved country Pakistan. Bless us with unity and progress. Let’s meet our great leaders and remember the sacrifices of the martyrs and together build a brighter, stronger one,” she wrote.

Hina Altaf posed in a white shalwar kameez and green dupatta, writing, “Happy Independence Day to everyone. Celebrating independence and standing with fellow Kashmiris today as well. Freedom is incomplete until it’s shared by all.”

Zubab Rana echoed the green-and-white theme in a plain white shalwar kameez with a dark green dupatta while holding the national flag. “Let’s keep the spirit of freedom alive in our hearts and minds,” she wrote.

 

 

Danish Taimoor shared a picture of himself with the national flag alongside a lengthy reflection on Pakistan’s challenges and achievements.

“We complain about Pakistan. We argue about what needs to change. We get frustrated, disappointed, and sometimes even lose hope. But at the end of the day… this is home,” he wrote.

“Less hate. More respect. Less division. More unity. Less ‘what has Pakistan given me?’ and more ‘what can I give back?’ We have a long way to go, but I’ll never stop believing in this country and its people. We are Pakistan. And Pakistan is us,” he added.

Actor Aiman Khan posted a video of herself wearing a green-and-white jersey and singing along to a national song, simply writing, “Happy Birthday Pakistan.”

Yasir Hussain celebrated Pakistan’s natural beauty through a series of pictures featuring mountains, animals, locals and sunsets. “May the moon keep sparkling. May this flag be our highest,” he wrote.

 

Actors Zara Noor Abbas and Asad Siddiqui celebrated the night with their family while watching fireworks.

“Whether we are free or not, this is a different debate. But we are on our land. We are in our country. No one can escape us from here because of the ‘foreign’ passport. Our house. Nobody can snatch my identity from me,” Siddiqui wrote.

Faisal Quraishi also shared pictures of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal.

“May the spirit of freedom, unity, and patriotism always inspire us to build a stronger and more prosperous Pakistan. Wishing you and your loved ones peace, happiness, and success,” he wrote.

Pakistani cricketers also joined the Independence Day celebrations, sharing pictures featuring the national flag and their cricket gear.

Babar Azam posted a picture of himself waving the flag at a stadium.

“Today’s day is dedicated to the flag whose star adorns our chest, then our identity is complete. Long live Pakistan!” he wrote.

Shahid Afridi shared a picture from his recent visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

“My blood, my soul, and every heartbeat belongs to this sacred soil. Nothing gives me greater pride than standing under our green flag. Pakistan is my identity, my strength, and my whole life,” he wrote.

While many celebrities celebrated Pakistan’s Independence Day with messages of patriotism, others used the occasion to draw attention to political and safety concerns, particularly amid ongoing concerns over violence, assault and murder.

Actor Hina Khawaja questioned the need for celebration amid what she described as political and safety concerns.

“How can we celebrate 14th August? We used to wake up in the mornings to see the parade and visit Quaid-e-Azam’s mazaar, and tell our kids in schools how we gained this freedom and who was behind this. Who were the leaders and common people who left behind a lot in order to gain these rights for us and the future people,” she said.

Khawaja added, “However, today I see videos of people dancing and celebrating that freedom. If you leave your house, it is not the same. It is not the same freedom if small kids are being raped and parents are taking their children to the graves where no justice is being served.”

Actors Iqra Aziz and Sonya Hussain similarly used their platforms to question the nature of the celebrations.

Aziz shared statistics about recent killings in the country following the night’s celebrations, while Hussain questioned whether celebrating alone was enough when meaningful change was still needed.

However, August 14 remains a day of pride, patriotism and remembrance — an opportunity to celebrate the sacrifices that led to the creation of Pakistan and reaffirm the connection to the country.
