Veteran broadcaster Ishrat Fatima has spoken out strongly against ageism in the entertainment and news industries, arguing that respect for senior artists should be based on talent, professionalism, and character rather than age.

During a podcast hosted by Tauseeq Haider, she defended senior performers, including Bushra Ansari, against online criticism, saying such remarks often reflect more on the critics than on the individuals being targeted.

She stressed that disrespect towards older women in showbiz highlights a broader societal problem, adding that experience and contribution to the industry should be valued instead of being diminished with age.

Ishrat further addressed colourism and the insecurities she faced growing up, recalling social pressure linked to her skin tone. She said she eventually learned to embrace her identity with confidence and dignity.

Reflecting on her own decades-long career, Ishrat said her commitment to journalism was rooted in a deep love for the Urdu language and correct pronunciation.

She credited senior broadcasters for mentoring her early in her career and emphasised the importance of passing that guidance on to younger professionals entering the field. She said she has always aimed to uphold professionalism, objectivity, and independence despite public scrutiny, maintaining her integrity and self-respect throughout her career.

The veteran anchor also spoke candidly about her personal life, including her three-decade-long marriage with her husband Saqib and the profound grief of losing her first daughter. She said the experience taught her to continue life with patience and faith despite immense emotional pain.
