Erica Robin condemns women criticising Aurat March organisers after Sheema Kermani’s arrest in Karachi
Erica Robin recently took to social media to share her disgust over women bringing other women down when it comes to fighting for their rights in Pakistan. The model shared a video message on Wednesday reacting to the arrest of activist Sheema Kermani and other organisers of the Aurat March on Tuesday.
Robin spoke in the video, sharing that she woke up to the “disgusting” and “disturbing” news that Aurat March had yet to receive the NOC (No Objection Certificate) for the march on May 10, which organisers had been fighting for. Instead, she said, women were seen dragging other women down, which she called a “very, very shameful act”. She further added that such behaviour makes it seem like “we don’t respect our women in our country”.
Robin also shared a reel showing Kermani being manhandled and pushed into a police car, saying she was appalled by the comments under the post.
“Forget men, women are so happy, and I am sure these are the same women who get beaten and abused by their fathers and brothers, and they continue to adjust and live with them,” she commented.
Adding further to her statement, Robin said it was “really shameful” that people cannot even “breathe freely” or openly speak their minds in the country. She added that whenever someone speaks up against such issues, it becomes “the biggest issue in the country”.
In her message, she also urged everyone in Karachi who could join the march to attend and show solidarity on Sunday. For those who could not attend and were afraid to join because of the “current situation”, she said it “totally makes sense”, but added that the least they could do was talk about it and post about it on social media.
“Staying silent hasn’t really gotten us anywhere, nor will it,” Erica Robin said.
She also shared an appeal to influential men and women, asking them to “acknowledge the women being arrested for peacefully marching for equal rights”. Robin added that much-needed awareness should be spread as “it costs nothing”, while reminding followers that “fashion, glamour and social responsibility can coexist”.
