India has added 52,537 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation from all sources combined in the ongoing financial year until January 31, the Union Ministry of Power said on Sunday (February 15, 2026). This translates to an addition of more than 11% to the total installed capacity of the country at end of the erstwhile financial year.

“This [also] marks the highest ever capacity addition in a single year, surpassing the previous record of 34,054 MW achieved during FY 2024–25,” it stated.

Of the total generation capacity added in the ongoing financial year, 39,657 MW consist of that from renewable energy sources. This is inclusive of 34,955 MW centred on solar power and 4,613 MW on wind power.

With the addition, as on end of January, according to the ministry, India commands a total power generation capacity of 5,20, 510.95 MW. Of the same, approximately 48%, or 2,48,541.62 MW, is based on fossil fuels.

Generation capacity centred on renewable sources represent about 50.5% of the overall capacity at 263,189.33 MW, whilst nuclear commands approximately 1.6% at 8,780 MW.
