Nova Scotia is set to reach its target of relying on 80 per cent renewable energy by 2030, mainly through new onshore wind farms.

The province’s deputy minister of the Department of Energy, Karen Gatien, said Tuesday that five new wind farms would be completed by the end of 2026, and another four are on track to be completed by 2028.

The province says that together, these wind farms could create close to 1,000 megawatts of energy, or roughly an additional 30 per cent of renewable energy.

Combined with solar power already generated by farms around Nova Scotia and other small projects, the province expects to reach 78 per cent renewable power by 2030.

But when it comes to offshore wind collection, details are less clear.

Gatien said she is optimistic that the first request for development bids on the offshore Wind West project could go out this summer.
