South Sudanese-American supermodel Anok Yai will be honoured as Model of the Year at The Fashion Awards 2025, organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and presented by Pandora at London’s Royal Albert Hall on December 1.

The award, decided by a panel of top fashion professionals, recognises a model who has made a defining global impact over the past year.

Yai’s selection follows a remarkable year that saw her dominate international runways and campaigns for Versace, Saint Laurent, Alaïa, and Mugler. She also fronted the cover of Vogue France and dazzled audiences at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

“Being named Model of the Year is such an honour,” Yai said in a statement. “My journey — from Egypt to South Sudan to the United States — is one of resilience and community. This recognition is for everyone who’s ever seen their story in mine.”

Born in Egypt to South Sudanese parents and raised in the US, the 27-year-old model has become one of fashion’s most influential figures, often hailed for reshaping beauty ideals and pushing for greater representation.

Her career began unexpectedly in 2017 when a street-style photograph taken at Howard University’s Homecoming went viral, propelling her into modelling and eventually leading her to make history as the second Black woman to open a Prada show after Naomi Campbell.

In addition to her modelling success, Yai recently expanded her creative scope by serving as Creative Director for Perfect Magazine, a move praised for highlighting her artistic vision beyond the catwalk.

This year’s Fashion Awards also marks the first major event under the BFC’s new chief executive officer, Laura Weir. Alongside Yai’s recognition, other honours will include Brunello Cucinelli’s Outstanding Achievement Award and a Special Recognition Award to Delphine Arnault, chairman and CEO of Christian Dior, for her contribution to the global fashion industry.

The Fashion Awards serve as the BFC Foundation’s flagship fundraiser, supporting emerging designers and promoting innovation within the British fashion industry. For Yai, the accolade cements her position not just as a top model but as a modern icon of artistry, resilience, and representation on the world stage.
