ISLAMABAD:

Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam, commended the International Labour and Environmental Standards (ILES) project for promoting sustainable practices in Pakistan’s industries, according to a press statement released on Thursday.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the ILES project, Alam highlighted its significant role in equipping enterprises with advanced environmental management practices that have helped reduce resource consumption and pollution.

The ILES project, launched in 2016 through a partnership between the International Labour Organisation (ILO), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the European Union, focused on fostering sustainable growth in Pakistan’s export-oriented sectors, including textiles, garments, and leather. It also ensured compliance with the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), enhancing the global competitiveness of these industries. Alam highlighted that the project improved occupational safety and health in small factories while boosting productivity in larger ones. She noted its vital contributions to aligning Pakistan’s policies with international labour and environmental standards, ensuring sustainable growth and economic stability.
